Three models of value in the real-time web
Marshall Kirkpatrick defines three models of value in the real-time web:
- Ambiance: The web is not just a collection of a body of texts, but there is a lot of social activity around those texts and other documents such as bookmarks, tweets and blogs. Those related activities convey information which can be crucial. So those real-time activities can be exploited by using better search tools, which take into account what is socially happening and what of that activity is most relevant to you (ReadWriteWeb is a good blog to find out how you can organize that now already).
- Automation. No, the Real Time Web does not mean we should all watch are screens constantly. Better monitoring tools will warn us more efficiently when something happens which is of interest to us.
- Emergence: linked to automation, tools will be further developed which can warn us when certain tresholds of emergence of certain keywords or concepts are reached. Think at the intelligence services, monitoring huge quantities of conversations and screening for certain keywords and concepts, technology which will get better and more commonplace.
